Terminal coding agent

October vs Codex CLI

Run Codex beside the other agents working on your project.

Checked · 3 official sources · Read the sources

Codex CLI is OpenAI’s terminal coding agent: it can inspect a repository, make changes, run commands, and review work. October provides a workspace around supported agents, including Codex, so the products can be used together. The CLI is a direct starting point when you want one focused coding loop or a scriptable workflow. October is useful when the work needs other agent tools, application previews, and teammates in the same place. This page covers Codex CLI; the Codex App comparison covers the desktop experience.

Choose October if

  • You want Codex beside other agent harnesses and their existing accounts.
  • You want the people, apps, browsers, and agent sessions involved in a task visible together.
  • You want a shared canvas and connected handoffs around the coding work.

Choose Codex CLI if

  • You want to work directly from a shell in an existing repository.
  • You want a scriptable Codex workflow for repeatable tasks and CI.
  • You want Codex’s own review, session-resume, skills, and MCP features.

Keep the terminal when it is enough

If your request is a focused fix in one repository, the shortest path may be to start Codex in that directory and work through the change. Its terminal workflow already includes review, delegation, and connections to external tools. October becomes useful when the surrounding coordination is the difficult part: another agent is checking the API, someone needs to inspect the running app, and results must pass between sessions. Compare that coordination need rather than assuming the CLI lacks basic development capabilities.

Separate a workspace from an execution engine

Codex still performs the coding when you use it through a supporting workspace. October helps organize where that session sits, which other sessions it connects to, and how people follow the result. Your Codex authentication, agent permissions, and provider usage remain relevant. Before adopting a larger workflow, test a small change and review its commands, diff, and checks. The goal is a clearer path to a correct result, not simply a larger number of simultaneous terminals.

A few practical questions.

Can I use Codex CLI with October?

Yes. October’s supported agent lineup includes Codex. You keep the agent and its account; October adds the surrounding workspace and coordination. Check the current integration documentation for the precise terminal or session behavior you need.

Can Codex already delegate work?

Yes. OpenAI’s CLI documentation describes subagents, along with skills, plugins, MCP, and dedicated review. October’s comparison point is coordinating independent tools and people in a shared workspace, rather than claiming that Codex cannot split up a task.

How is this different from the Codex App page?

This page is about terminal interaction, repository commands, and scripting. The Codex App page focuses on Codex’s desktop workflow, currently documented within the ChatGPT desktop app, including parallel projects and local or cloud work.
